About this registration
The Apprentice Electrician registration allows individuals to perform electrical work while learning the trade under the direct supervision of a licensed Texas electrician. Eligible supervisor license types include: Master Electrician, Journeyman Electrician, Residential Wireman, Journeyman Lineman, Journeyman Industrial Electrician, Master Sign Electrician, or Journeyman Sign Electrician. Apprentices may not work independently or unsupervised.
Pathway to licensure
Apprentice → Journeyman Electrician → Master Electrician
To advance to Journeyman Electrician, apprentices must:
- Accumulate the required hours of on-the-job training
- Pass the TDLR Journeyman Electrician examination
- Apply for and receive a Journeyman Electrician license from TDLR
Registration renewal
Renew your apprentice registration annually through the TDLR license portal . 4 hours of TDLR-approved CE are required prior to each annual renewal. Submit your renewal application and proof of CE completion between 1 year and 30 days before your expiration date. Renewal fee: $20. Registration must stay active to legally work as an apprentice.
