TDLR renewal steps for a Texas electrician license
Each license is valid for one year from the date of issue, and you renew it every year before the expiration date. You must complete 4 hours of continuing education before each renewal, from a TDLR-registered provider, within the term of the license you renew.

The steps

Find your expiration date. Look it up in the TDLR public license search . TDLR sends a reminder by email or postcard about 60 days before the license expires, but on-time renewal is your responsibility.

Complete 4 hours of continuing education. The course must come from a TDLR-registered provider. Confirm the course in the TDLR course search . One hour of continuing education is 50 minutes of instruction.

Confirm that TDLR has your hours. The provider reports the hours to TDLR. If you do not get your certificate within 15 days after the course, contact the provider first.

Send the renewal application online. Use the TDLR online renewal application and pay the fee for your license. The fee is not refundable.

Keep the receipt. If you lose it, ask TDLR for a duplicate renewal receipt .
The course does not renew the license. The course covers step 2 only.

Renewal fee by license type
TDLR charges $45 for a Master Electrician license, $30 for a Journeyman Electrician license, and $20 for a Residential Wireman, Maintenance Electrician, or Apprentice Electrician license.

If your license has already expired
- Expired up to 18 months: renew online and pay the late fee in the table.
- Expired 18 to 36 months: renew by mail. Send the application for your license and the Request to Executive Director for Expired License Renewal form, with the fee.
- Expired more than 36 months: A license expired for more than 36 months cannot be renewed. You must apply for a new license.

Rules for the 4 hours
- Take the hours within the term of the license you renew. If the license expires on 1 Jan 2027, you must take the hours between 1 Jan 2026 and 1 Jan 2027.
- If you hold more than one license, you complete 4 hours in total, not 4 hours for each license.
- An apprentice can take the 4 hours, or be enrolled in a TDLR-registered apprenticeship training program.
- Contractors do not need continuing education.
